BACLS Events Funding 2025-26

Following the re-launch of the BACLS events funding programme, bids are invited from BACLS members seeking small amounts of funding to support the running of small-scale events which reflect the purview of the association. Bid documents should include:

  • Details of the organising committee including a short professional bio [200 words max].
  • Details of host institution if relevant.
  • Activity Outline and Case for Support with reference to the below selection criteria [1000 words max].
  • Cost breakdown for the funding requested. Please bear in mind that funding is limited. As a rough guide, a one-day seminar with around 20 attendees would usually be funded at around £75.00. Consider also where BACLS might be able to fill gaps that centralised funding cannot i.e. costings that are not eligible to be covered by standard research funding at an individual’s home institution.

Selection Criteria

Events supported will be in the area of literary studies in the broadest sense, including written, visual, performative and audible texts, in English and other languages. We are open to applications from scholars working on the contemporary in literature and cognate disciplines, including, but not limited to, comparative and world literatures, postcolonial studies, translation studies, linguistics, performance studies, media theory, comics studies, video games studies, adaptation studies, the study of popular music, cultural studies, publishing studies and contemporary book history, critical theory and digital humanities. The remit of the events should be in the contemporary understood in the sense of the ‘rolling’ contemporary. Events should highlight exciting new work in contemporary literary studies, not reproduce established topics and approaches.

Applications for events supporting professional development, especially of PGRs and ECAs, reflections on pedagogy, and events on activism and good practice in academia are encouraged. Likewise, while traditional formats are welcome, applicants are equally invited to consider experimental or non-traditional activity formats

BACLS is committed to diversity and inclusion. Thus, events supported should not feature all male panels/keynotes (where all male panels are submitted, the event organisers should explain the policy, and offer a chance to resubmit). Similarly, events should be accessible and committed to keeping the costs down, especially for PGRs and precariously employed ECAs.

Awards can cover costs associated to the event, such as room bookings and catering, as well as other costs, for instance PG/ECA travel bursaries to support attendance. A speaker fee can be factored in the budget only for non-academic speakers. The selection panel reserves the right to decide which costs of the event BACLS will fund. In certain cases, only a portion of the funds requested may be awarded.
